David Unsworth praised Everton's fighting spirit after they came from two goals down to beat Watford 3-2 at Goodison Park.
Leighton Baines' injury-time penalty completed an incredible Everton fightback, with Watford's Tom Cleverley missing his spot-kick in the 11th minute of added time.
Everton were winless in their last eight games in all competitions and had lost the last five going into Sunday's game, but victory has lifted them out of the relegation zone and into 15th in the Premier League table.
And the manner Everton secured their valiant victory over Watford particularly pleased interim manager Unsworth.
"I'm proud of the club. Proud of the fans and players, and the way we got back into the game
We showed great fight and spirit and that's what you need when you're at the bottom of the table.
"You have to show desire and determination and never give in. You have to show that type of attitude. We didn't give in and we've climbed up the table tonight and it looks better than it did before the game.
"Psychologically it looks better. We've got the win, given the players some confidence. Nobody wants to go into an international break without winning the last game so it lifts the club and it's something to build on.
